ASD works with a wide range of clients including governments, donors, private clients and community groups. ASD has developed unmatched networks within the African renewable, rural electrification and development sectors.
Our Nairobi-based team offers excellent experience in the regional electrification sector. ASD understands on- and off-grid electrification technologies, policies, market trends, key players, and the challenges facing market development. We know what works for Africa.
For our commercial clients, we provide top-tier feasibility studies, system design, installation and after-service support. ASD enters every new relationship ‘technology agnostic’, with no prescription until our experts have assessed the client’s specific needs.
We have a unique understanding of energy access and community development. We work with communities to develop sustainable business models and technical solutions that meet changing rural electrification needs. Through our work, ASD has seen the successes of private sector approaches to energy access. Our team has been active in the field across 20 countries for over 30 years.

Mark Hankins has been a pioneer in in rural electrification and renewable energy in East and Southern Africa for over 25 years. He has worked for private clients, the UN, the World Bank, UNIDO, the GEF, Sida, USAID and others. As MD of African Solar Designs, Ltd., he is a permanent resident of Kenya with both advisory and engineering skills. In the PV sector, he specializes in training, commercial market development, policy, system engineering and project development. An author of 5 books on solar energy and renewables, he has worked on off-grid electrification projects in over 20 countries in Africa.
Isaiah Gitau is a determined worker with vast experience in business management, finance and accounting. Gitau attained his BBA degree in Business Management and Finance at Saint Paul University, and is currently pursuing an MBA degree at Saint Paul University as well. In addition, he has also attended financial, HRM and Taxation courses. Gitau has been a key resource in offering day to day office management and support to ASD staff and its clients. He has been involved in project management, project logistics, procurement, crises management and advising on project taxation, HRM and operations.
Benard has over 9 years of proven experience in the energy and ICT industry including technical consulting, engineering management, energy and network design, project management and high level troubleshooting. He has a bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nairobi and a holder of Energy Regulatory Commission T3 PV Solar license.
Dorcas has over 8 years of experience in administration and management. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration and management from St. Paul's University, Kenya. In her role as a project management officer at African Solar Designs (ASD), Dorcas fosters an environment of teamwork and ensures effective project management while maintaining company morale. Her strong communication and client service skills enhance ASD’s process-driven management philosophy.
Faith is an administrative assistant at African Solar Designs (ASD). Faith is a capable, determined, and confident administrative assistant with extensive experience in supporting mid and senior level managers by providing them with consistent clerical support. She is a highly approachable individual who has a pleasant attitude and willingness to make a positive mark.
